Types of Intellectual Properties in UAE



Intellectual property is anything that is created using the mind, such as inventions or artistic works, symbols, logo, names, or images used in commercial activities. There are two types of intellectual properties – 
  • Patents for trademark, inventions, geographical indications, and industrial designs. 
  • Copyright covers of poems, novels, and plays, music, films, artistic works like paintings, drawings, sculptures and photographs, as well as architectural designs. 

Types of intellectual properties 

Patent – This exclusive right is issued for any procedure from innovative idea, new invention, or innovative improvement to any product or imagination implemented or designed in a scientific way. The invention can be anything like application or process of a new approach or a device. 

Things that cannot be patented legally – 
  • Scientific theories, principles, mathematical formula and discoveries. 
  • Treatment methods of animals and humans like surgical and therapeutic methods, and diagnostics that are vital for medical treatment
  • Business procedures, processes and methods for operations 

Industrial Design – An industrial design is another intellectual property in UAE which includes the aesthetic element of a tool. It may have 3D features like the shape of any item or 2D features like lines, color or patterns. Industrial design right protects the design created by an individual against infringement. 

Copyright – This legal term refers to the rights of creators on their own artistic works and literature. Copyright covers different types of works like music, books, paintings, films, and sculptures, to database, software, maps, ads, and technical blueprints. 

Trademark – It is designed to secure brands. It can be anything that can make a service or product stand out as well as the brand name. The trademark or brand consists of words that represent your service or product. If words are included in the trademark or brand, it is known as a word mark and some of the common examples are logos and slogans.
